Beltane

I've just noticed the date as well - Mayday, or Beltane in the old calenders. But is it? Beltane is traditionally a festival that celebrates springtime and the fecundity of life (for those that don't know the Maypole is a very phallic symbol that reflects this heritage, particularly when it is gently enfolded by skeins of soft material wrapped around it by young ladies).
But over here it's Autumn - so is it Beltane or Samhein? New life or the transition to darker cold days? And is it even relevant when you live in a subtropical region that only has two really distinct seasons (the hot season and the really hot & wet season) and where things grow all year round? Neo-pagans in the Southern hemisphere must struggle at times...
